New blog

Now that I've started my foundation degree, I'm creating a new separate blog for assessment purposes.

Update

It's been a while since I updated my blog so I thought I'd show the final pieces of my first 2 foundation degree projects. The first two pieces are from my game design concept art project, an environment and a character. For the environment we had complete freedom. For the character we had to stick with a nautical theme and address a malady, such as a headache, a sore throat, post traumatic stress etc, in a style similar to Zombie Vikings. To this end I produced a Viking with a sea serpent/worm gnawing off he head, in keeping with both the nautical and malady themes. An alternate idea was a pirate with a parrot pecking his head.

For the environment I went with a portal located within a woodland glade. I was trying to design a somewhat simple/circumspect section of a side scrolling game, in the vein of Child of Light or Rayman Origins.

And this is a double paged spread for a comic:

Summer Holidays

Thought I'd share some stuff I've worked on during the summer holidays.

For the above and below characters, I was trying to make armour designs that would be at home in a sci fi or fantasy world. Although I think they came out both more heavily leaning towards sci fi.

This was a native American inspired piece of character design. My dad has been making a Native American shield for me, to go up on my wall, so my mind has been heavily inundated with Native imagery and designs recently. I've tried to disregard all of it though, and create as original a costume as possible. So, to any native American experts out there, this probably doesn't look native American in the slightest :P

Tried out a variety of background designs, started designing another outfit, and designed a sort of demonic mask. I am currently working on another outfit, a cross between the above and a Napoleonic uniform, which should be finished in the next few days:

UPDATE: Here is the Napoleonic/native character, combined with my first character in a sci fi, dystopian city:

And here is a random witch I ended up painting. Don't know much about anatomy/drawing people, so wanted to practice drawing faces. I should probably start using references to that end. Recently been reading Slaine: the Horned God, and I think Ukko's facial expressions must have influenced me subconsciously :P

This is a WIP photo of the shield my dad is working on. Once it's finished, he's going to make one an anachronistic shield with one of my designs.

Here are some of the designs I've been working on. My favourites are the yellow and green shields on the top row. The design on the far right of the top row is supposed to be a stylized owl of sorts, not sure if that's obvious or not :P The design in the second column, third row down is supposed to be a stylized turtle/tortoise. Again, I'm not sure if it's obvious or not :P The rest of the designs are sort of random/abstract:

I've also created more and edited my rune designs since my game design project:

Kickstarter: Blood Red Moon comic

I've never really paid much attention to Kickstarter before, but after a slew of great games popping up on Steam, my interest was piqued and I dived in. I'm starting to regret this decision, as my bank account is slowly running out of coinage :P In all seriousness though, one project that stood out to me, for it's insanely cool art and insanely cool premise, was Blood Red Moon by Victor Wright. Vikings. Werewolves. Vikings and werewolves. Need I say more?

Blog design, The Late Shows and the Witcher 3

Been a while since my last update.

Got bored with my blogs design. Not happy with the colour scheme yet, gonna be fiddling with it for the next few days.

This is the old design:

And the new one:

On another note, the Late Shows installation was a success, with over 500 people through the doors(not sure if I mentioned it before, but my last animation was for the Late Shows at the Discovery Museum).

This is the almost final iteration. For the installation I removed the cockpit, as it was difficult to tell what was going on when projected on the ceiling. Too much was obscured.

Also, I recently entered an art competition for the Witcher 3. Here is my entry:

Inspired by the "A Night to Remember" song:

'For the Witcher, brave and bold
Paid in coin of gold
He’ll chop and slice you
Cut and dice you
Eat. You. Up. Whole.

It's an interesting idea, that from different perspectives, a hero can be seen as a brutal, ruthless villain. Sort of like how the darkseekers in I Am Legend view Neville as a murderer, to be feared and loathed.

I wanted the nekkers to seem defenseless/helpless, while Geralt casually dispatches them, with a cold, merciless look on his face, glaring at the viewer as if daring them to question/judge him.

Big update: 2.5d animation

Made an underground cave for the second part of my 2.5d animation:

Alternate version:

And here is a test of it in motion, with a cockpit:

Also made a few cockpit variations:

Cockpit updates

Pretty much got the base sorted. Need to add some screens, control panels etc, and finalise the lighting.
